Flipping through the pages of King Magazine, a shoe ad for ‘Rockport’ caught my eye. The ad features four urban rising stars, R&B sensation Lyfe Jennings, rapper Yung Joc, actor Wood Harris, and TV personality Coltrane Curtis. The distinguished gentlemen’s look of Rockport's shoes really made me gravitate to the line. Immediately after putting the magazine down I rushed online to find out where I could get my man a few pair of their shoes.
I was very surprised to find out that the line has been around for some years. Established in 1971 by father and son , Saul and Bruce Katz. The duo felt what was missing from the shoe industry was the combination of lightweight materials, comfort and style.
In 1984 industry footwear giant Reebok bought Rockport. The line has come a long way over the years. Targeting an urban audience allows the company to tap into the gentlemen that have a taste for the finer footwear in life. Rockport produces a variety of loafers, boat shoes, oxfords, sandals, boots, and walking shoes. These are available in men's, women's, and occasionally even children's styles.
I would much rather see a man in a nice pair of stylish loafers or oxfords then to see him showing up to dinner in some Jordans (limited edition at that). Incorporating celebrities such as Yung Joc into their ads also shows the younger generation of men today that you can still rock a pair of jeans and a fly shirt with a nice pair of loafers instead of the typical sneakers.
